Cloth diapers in daycare, kindergarten or with childminders

For many parents, cloth diapers make everyday family life easier. They mean lower costs for the family and less mental load when it comes to diaper shopping. On Saturdays, there's no more calculating whether the remaining pack will last until the next shopping trip or whether the next size up is needed. If you run out of diapers, simply start a load of cloth diapers in the washing machine, and after a short drying time, your supply is replenished.

This relief often ends, however, when the child is placed in childcare. Grandparents sometimes struggle with cloth diapers, especially when multiple systems are used (in the worst case, they ruin the diapers by washing them in the washing machine with the wrong detergent), and kindergartens or daycare centers refuse to use anything other than disposable diapers. For many cloth diaper families, this means they are forced to switch to environmentally harmful and unhealthy disposable diapers.

Switching to disposable diapers and the chemicals in them can cause children to suddenly develop skin problems or diaper rash. The cost of disposable diapers skyrockets, and clothing suddenly starts to slip. So how can you manage the challenge of putting your children in kindergarten, daycare, or other childcare while still continuing to use cloth diapers?

Cloth diapers and daycare or kindergarten

The regulations in daycare centers and kindergartens vary not only from district to district and city to city, but also from institution to institution. Some daycare centers and kindergartens welcome the use of cloth diapers, while others reject them completely. It's always worthwhile to contact the daycare centers and kindergartens directly to discuss their specific policies.

Which cloth diaper is suitable for daycare or kindergarten?

All-in-one or pocket diapers are best because they are easy to change. Our Lybbie diapers are specially designed for challenges like these. They are easy and quick to change, leak-proof, and long-lasting.

Fear of extra work with cloth diapers

Many daycare centers and kindergartens are apprehensive about complicated diapering systems that they would have to learn – but with all-in-one diapers, such as the Lybbie diaper, this hurdle can definitely be overcome. The cloth diaper is simply placed around the child like a disposable diaper and then fastened. That's it. Because the highly absorbent flap is sewn in, staff don't have to assemble or hold anything together before changing; they can simply take the diaper out of the pouch, put it on, and that's it.

No time for multiple diaper changes

Many cloth diapers only stay leak-proof for 2 to 3 hours and then need to be changed, otherwise they leak. This can disrupt the daily routine at daycare or kindergarten, which is why many daycare centers and kindergartens prefer to use disposable diapers. For this reason, our absorbent core contains bamboo, as it can absorb a large amount of urine. Lybbie diapers typically stay leak-proof for 4 hours and can therefore withstand the demands of daily daycare life.

Stool in the diaper

Lybbie diapers are made of a special material that makes it harder for stool to stick. This allows you to simply shake the diaper over a toilet or trash can to dispose of the stool. The diaper is then placed in the wet bag . If you are using other cloth diapers or want to be extra sure, you can insert a diaper liner. The liner will catch the stool and can be easily disposed of. To make things as easy as possible for staff at daycare centers and kindergartens, the liner can be placed inside the cloth diapers at home.

Storing the diapers

Children often need to bring a change of clothes to daycare or kindergarten, which are then stored separately. A few fresh cloth diapers can be included with these. Alternatively, the fresh cloth diapers can be brought in a wet bag. A small wet bag should be provided for the used cloth diapers. This ensures that soiled diapers are stored hygienically.

Cloth diapers and grandparents or babysitters

Some grandparents themselves used cloth diapers (although the cloth diapers of that time and their cleaning were quite an adventure) and therefore have at least a basic understanding of the topic. The aim here isn't so much to show grandparents how to use cloth diapers, but rather to explain to them that things have changed quite a bit since their own diapering days.

Today's cloth diapers are significantly more leak-proof and comfortable. They are thinner and more durable. And no one needs to boil diapers anymore. The right detergent at 60 degrees Celsius is perfectly sufficient for washing cloth diapers.

To remove even more obstacles, we invented our Lybbie diaper, a cloth diaper that meets the toughest demands. It's easy to use – even the most inexperienced babysitters can easily put on our Lybbie diaper, and it's quick to wash in an emergency. Thanks to our special material, the Lybbie diaper dries in no time and can even be used, washed, and dried by grandparents or babysitters, eliminating the need to bring wet diapers home.
