Kliniktasche & Wickelstart: Mekonium, Windeln und 15 Mal Kacka am Tag

Hospital bag & diaper change start: Meconium, diapers and 15 poops a day

My hospital bag is packed. Almost.

But what about diapers? Can I use cloth diapers on my baby right after birth? And what exactly is meconium ?

In short:
Yes, you can use Lybbie right from day one. But with a little trick and some preparation.

Meconium

A baby's very first bowel movement is called meconium. It looks like black lacquer, feels like cold tar, and actually has no smell.
But it's tough , sticky , and persistent . Especially in textiles, but also on delicate baby skin (here, soak a damp cloth with oil and gently clean the baby).

Therefore, we recommend the following for the first few days immediately after birth:
🖤 Use disposable diapers for the first 1-2 days.
or
🖤 Combine our Lybbie with a protective paper insert

With our protective paper, your diaper stays clean and you can diaper your baby with Lybbies from day 1.

And now, real talk: 15 times a day? Yes, really.

Newborns have incredibly frequent bowel movements in the first few days to weeks.
Eight. Twelve. Fifteen times a day. And that's perfectly normal.

This is because their digestive system is still adjusting, and that means an incredible amount of diapers go through in the first few weeks. This is precisely where cloth diapers are particularly suitable: instead of having to buy around 300 disposable diapers (an immense waste of money and also a huge mountain of trash), you can breeze through the big poop wave with a 14-pack of Lybbie diapers.

Lybbies dry really quickly and are ready to use again in no time. And milk stool is water-soluble and can therefore be washed in the washing machine.

This means for you:
🖤 Don't be surprised, the diaper will need to be changed almost every 1-2 hours for the first few days.
🖤 That's about 300 disposable diapers or 14 Lybbies.

Hospital bag: What you need for diaper changes

  • 8–10 diapers for 24–36 hours (disposable diapers or Lybbie + insert)

  • 1 large wet bag or diaper bag (for used diapers)

  • 1 small amount of nourishing oil (e.g. almond oil instead of cream)

  • 1-2 spare bodies, because things can easily go wrong at the beginning (don't worry, you'll get the hang of it quickly)

And what if everything turns out differently?

That's perfectly fine. You can always change your mind or start using cloth diapers later. Just try everything out and use the option that suits you best.

Lybbie isn't there to make everything right and perfect. She's there to support you, even when things get tricky at first.
